Severins Gang in Die Finsternis: Ein Prager Gespensterroman

Prague in 1914 is not a city but a temptation. Severin, twenty-three and trapped in a dead-end bureaucratic existence, feels the pull of its shadowed streets like a drug. He drifts through gray offices and grayer days until the enigmatic Lazarus Kain draws him into the city's hidden depths, a underworld of spectral women, dangerous passions, and desires that consume everything they touch. Zdenka and Susanna become mirrors for his escalating need to feel something, anything, before the autumn dark swallows him whole. Leppin writes Prague as a living entity: crooked lanes that lead nowhere, thresholds that hide catastrophe, beauty that wounds. This is not a ghost story in the conventional sense, it's a novel about being haunted by your own longing, about the way a city can become a trap built from all the yearnings you've refused to surrender. The prose burns with late-night intensity and the particular melancholy of a world about to end. For readers who want their gothic fiction literary, their Prague atmospheric, and their heroes destroyed by the very passion they seek.
