Security

Collins arrived at Fair Oaks Nuclear Energy Laboratories with the kind of mind that changes things. He left each day a little more hollow. The security protocols meant to protect national secrets have become a cage around everything he does: his research stalls, his colleagues keep their distance, and even simple friendship feels like a security risk. When Division Administrator Gordon makes clear that Collins is trapped, a job he cannot leave and cannot truly do, the scientist teeters on the edge of despair. Then Mason offers him something unexpected: a way out that doesn't require escape. By publishing in an unrelated field under a pseudonym, embedding real science in botanical papers no one at Fair Oaks will ever read, Mason has found a loophole. The system cannot touch what it cannot see. This is a story about the small, quiet ways brilliant people survive when institutions forget that security was meant to enable discovery, not replace it. It resonates now as it did then: a sharp, wistful portrait of creativity under surveillance, and the stubborn refusal to be extinguished.
