Novels, Science-Fiction & Fantasy

A disenchanted businessman named T. Arthur Johnson has built a comfortable life, yet something feels irreparably wrong. When scientist Cavendish unveils an experimental device called a temporal transgressor, Johnson sees his chance to journey back to the pivotal moments of his youth: childhood crises, teenage crossroads, the choices that shaped the man he became. Each return trip carries the weight of longing and the desperate hope that this time, he might get it right. But Hoskins, writing in 1962, understands something urgent about regret: the past is not a locked door waiting for the right key. As Johnson rewinds and replays the scenes of his younger self, he discovers that changing history demands more than mere presence in the room. The memories he carried as certainties begin to fracture. What he finds instead of redemption is something harder and more honest: an understanding that the person he became exists because of, not despite, every failure and misstep. This is quiet, melancholy science fiction, more interested in the geography of regret than the mechanics of time travel. For readers who loved The Twilight Zone's bittersweet endings and Bradbury's sentimental futurism, Second Chance offers an uncomfortable truth we all suspect but rarely voice: we are the sum of our regrets, and perhaps that's not entirely bad.
