Scream at Midnight

Scream at Midnight is a relic of a different era in horror fiction, self-published in 1963 by Joseph Payne Brennan in a signed limited run of just 250 copies. These ten stories pulse with the untamed energy of a writer who simply had to tell his tales, regardless of commercial viability. The title novella, 'The Horror at Chilton Castle,' stands as the crown: a gothic knockout where an unnamed narrator tracing his ancestry arrives at a crumbling English castle during a storm, only to uncover a blood-soaked family secret locked in a hidden chamber. But the collection's power lies in its variety. From the titular vampire bat terrorizing a quiet town to a man whose fear of masks reveals something far more disturbing about the human condition, Brennan moves between supernatural dread and creeping psychological unease. 'The Dump' and 'The Tenants' offer bleak, almost绝望 (hopeless) visions of ordinary life curdling into nightmare. This is pre-modern horror, unafraid to be strange, ugly, or unsettling. For readers who crave fiction that feels genuinely dangerous and forgotten, these pages deliver.
