School-Room Humour

The perennial comedy of children interpreting the world literally has never been funnier than in this early 20th-century collection. T. J. Macnamara gathered the choicest gems from classrooms: a pupil baffled by 'B.C.' and 'B.A.' wondering if they stand for 'Before Adam' and 'After Adam,' a teacher confronted with answers no textbook could anticipate, and countless small disasters of misunderstanding that still ring true a century later. What emerges is a portrait of childhood's peculiar logic alongside the weary, devoted educators who must navigate it. Macnamara clearly delights in children's imaginative misinterpretations while showing genuine affection for teachers wrestling with daily chaos. The humor is gentle but sharp, the kind that makes you ache with recognition. These classroom exchanges have lost nothing in translation. Perfect for anyone who remembers being confused in class, or who teaches those who still are.
