Sab (novela Original)
1841

In 1841, a Cuban woman wrote one of the first anti-slavery novels in the Americas. Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda's SAB follows a mulatto overseer trapped between worlds, too educated to accept his bondage, too dark to be accepted by the white society that exploits him. Sab carries an impossible love for Carlota, his master's daughter, a childhood friend whose proximity only deepens his anguish. This is a novel about the body and soul under oppression: how slavery corrupts every relationship, how a man can be both powerful and powerless, how love becomes another form of destruction in a world built on human ownership. Avellaneda writes with Romantic passion about an unforgivable institution, and her protagonist remains one of literature's most tragic figures, a man who thinks, feels, and dreams with the intensity of any hero, yet is legally classified as property. More than a century and a half later, SAB endures because it asks the question no one in 1841 wanted answered: what does it mean to be human when the law says you are not?
