Rudolph Eucken: A Philosophy of Life

Rudolf Eucken won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1908, an unprecedented honor for a philosopher, because his work spoke directly to the human hunger for meaning in an age of accelerating doubt. This book, written by his Welsh student Abel J. Jones, serves as an accessible gateway to Eucken's challenging vision of life. Eucken argued that Western philosophy had become too focused on abstract systems and had lost touch with the fundamental realities of human existence. His solution was not another theory but a call to action: a philosophy of life rooted in ethical struggle and spiritual depth. Jones presents Eucken's critique of naturalism and socialism as insufficient for addressing the deeper questions of human purpose, while articulating a relational, action-oriented approach to existence. This book remains compelling for anyone who feels that modern thought has emptied life of significance and seeks a framework for living with genuine meaning.
