Richard Richard

A financially strapped intellectual with a sardonic edge meets a spirited young woman aching for adventure on a steamer bound for Naples. What begins as an odd couple's spontaneous tour of the ancient city becomes something stranger: a collision between cynicism and innocence, between a man who has learned to expect nothing and a woman who expects everything. Their dialogue crackles with wit and subtext. Richard's world-weary detachment challenges Geraldine's fearless enthusiasm as they wander through ancient streets, each reshaping the other's view of the world. Mearns captures a particular historical moment, Edwardian society loosening its grip, new ideas about class and independence circulating in the Mediterranean air. It's a slight novel, but a perfectly pitched one: a story about what happens when you abandon caution and let a stranger lead you into the unknown. For readers who enjoy early 20th-century character studies with genuine charm and dry humor.
