Revolted Woman: Past, Present, and to Come
1894
Charles G. Harper's 1894 sociocultural satire offers a window into Victorian England's panicked response to the emerging 'New Woman.' Written with sardonic fury, the text attacks women's aspirations for equality as 'illogical,' 'hysterical,' and fundamentally unnatural. Harper mocks dress reform, political ambitions, and intellectual equality with a pen dripping with contempt, invoking Eve's 'primeval curse' as proof women should remain subservient. The book is less an argument than an indictment, revealing the anxious masculine energy behind late-Victorian anti-suffrage sentiment. For modern readers, it's a bracing artifact: not a guilty pleasure, but a necessary one for anyone studying how patriarchy articulated its own decline.
