Revenge

A biochemist with a revolutionary (and terrifying) solution to the drug problem decides the world deserves to be taught a lesson. He's created a virus that will wipe the opium poppy from the earth, eliminating heroin at its source. But when he takes his discovery to the appropriate government agencies, he encounters bureaucratic indifference and outright rejection. Spurned and uncredited, the biochemist takes matters into his own hands: he releases the virus and watches the global opium supply collapse. Yet satisfaction eludes him. Unrecognized, uncompensated, he hatches an even darker plan - viruses for yeast and tobacco, a vendetta against a society that dared to dismiss him. Written in the early 1960s, this compact nightmare imagines what happens when one brilliant, bitter man decides to play God with the global food supply. It's a chilling portrait of wounded pride, technological hubris, and thecatastrophic logic of 'teaching society a lesson.'
