Rebecca's Promise

Rebecca Mary Wyman is a schoolteacher trapped in modest circumstances, her days ruled by financial anxiety and the suffocating expectations of early 20th century womanhood. When her cousin Susan proposes a radical idea - adopt a "Memory Insurance Policy" and start collecting joy instead of just worries - something in Rebecca cracks open. An afternoon tea at the Waloo becomes a portal to possibility: the enchanted child Joan who presses violets into her hand, the war hero Peter Simmons whose presence ignites both longing and possibility. What begins as desperate self-soothing transforms into a genuine journey of the heart. This is not a story of dramatic escapes or grand romances, but something quieter and perhaps more radical: one woman's refusal to let poverty rob her of living. For readers who savor gentle period fiction with emotional depth, for anyone who has ever longed for more than their circumstances allowed.
