Quelques Écrivains Français: Flaubert, Zola, Hugo, Goncourt, Huysmans, Etc.

Hennequin's critical studies, written in the late 19th century when these writers were still living or recently deceased, offer something modern criticism cannot: the electric urgency of contemporaneous judgment. Here we encounter Flaubert not as an enshrined master but as a daring innovator, his prose dissected with the intense, sometimes hostile attention that only new work receives. Zola's emerging naturalism, Huysmans' decadent experiments, Hugo's massive shadow over them all, Hennequin examines these figures while their influence was still contested, their reputations still in flux. The section on Flaubert stands out: Hennequin brilliantly explicates the tension between stark realism and poetic beauty in Madame Bovary and Salammbô, showing how Flaubert's meticulous word choice and rhythmical sentence structure constituted a revolutionary method. This is criticism written with the stakes of someone watching literature being remade in real time. For readers of French literature, literary historians, and anyone curious about how these canonical works were first received, Hennequin provides an invaluable window into the critical climate of his era.
