Punch, or the London Charivari, Volume 1, December 18, 1841

This is December 1841, and Punch magazine is just months old, already sharpening its knives for Victorian society. Founded that summer, this would become the most influential satirical periodical in English, the publication that gave the word "cartoon" its modern meaning and launched the careers of legendary illustrators and wits. This early issue captures the magazine finding its voice: sharp-eyed, irreverent, and deeply amused by the absurdities of London life. Here you'll find medical students like Mr. Muff fumbling through examinations, eccentric characters stumbling through social encounters, and theatrical folk in comic disarray. But beneath the levity lies something sharper, a magazine gleefully pricking the balloons of the respectable and powerful, chronicling the small humiliations and grand pretensions of early Victorian London. The humor is immediate and particular: jokes about choke-damp in lecture halls, absurdist exchanges between pompous doctors and bewildered patients, the eternal comedy of people trying to appear more important than they are. For readers curious about what Victorians actually found funny, or how English satire evolved into something that could wound kings and reframe politics, this is a front-row seat at the birth of a cultural institution.
