Public and Private Life of Animals: Adapted from the French of Balzac, Droz, Jules Janin, E. Lemoine, a. De Musset, Georges Sand, &c.

In 1840s Paris, the animals of the Jardin des Plantes have had enough. They convene a grand congress to air their grievances against humanity, and what unfolds is a furiously funny portrait of a society trying to reorganize itself. A lion argues for emigration. A tiger proposes war. A dog delivers a surprisingly heartfelt petition for better treatment. What begins as satirical comedy reveals itself as sharp political philosophy, with the animal kingdom becoming a mirror for every failing of human governance, class structure, and hypocrisy. The anonymous author, drawing on Balzac, George Sand, and others, constructed a layered allegory that works on two levels: a whimsical beast fable for the surface reader, and a razor-sharp critique of post-revolutionary French society for anyone paying attention. The humor is period-specific, the satire biting, and the ending suggests that perhaps the animals aren't so different from the humans they despise. This is Animal Farm before Animal Farm, minus the didacticism and with significantly more wit.
