Prophets of Dissent: Essays on Maeterlinck, Strindberg, Nietzsche and Tolstoy

Published in 1889, 'Prophets of Dissent' by Otto Heller is a collection of essays examining the philosophies of four influential literary figures: Maurice Maeterlinck, August Strindberg, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Leo Tolstoy. Heller analyzes their radical viewpoints and artistic contributions, particularly in the context of social transformation and the impact of World War I on literature. The essays explore how these authors' ideas intersect and diverge, with a focus on Maeterlinck's mysticism and humanitarianism as a response to contemporary crises. This work provides insight into the evolution of modern thought and the role of literature in times of turmoil.
