Principles of Freedom

Terence MacSwiney wrote these words in the years before he chose to die for them. In 1920, the Lord Mayor of Cork starved himself to death in a British prison rather than abandon his conviction that Ireland's struggle was a fight for the very soul of a people. Principles of Freedom distills the philosophy that drove that sacrifice. MacSwiney argued that freedom was not merely a political condition but a moral and spiritual necessity, the birthright of any people refusing to be broken by tyranny. Drawing on articles written for the Irish Freedom newspaper between 1911 and 1912, he insisted that true liberation demanded not just independence from colonial rule but the cultivation of character, integrity, and unyielding justice within the nation itself. For MacSwiney, the corrupting influence of oppression worked on both colonizer and colonized; only through moral courage could Ireland emerge not merely free but worthy of freedom. This short, passionate work endures because it asks the question every revolutionary movement must eventually face: what are we willing to become in the process of becoming free?
