Pour La Patrie: Roman Du Xxe Siècle

This 1895 French-Canadian novel unfolds as a fevered prophecy of faith versus secular ruin. The story opens on a young man standing in storm-darkened Paris, invoking Eblis, the fallen one, as he prepares to journey to the Saint-Laurent River. His mission: to wage war against Christianity itself, to tear the Christian faith from the land he has chosen as his battlefield. Opposing him stands Joseph Lamirande, a physician whose quiet compassion and unwavering devotion represent everything the attacker seeks to destroy. But Tardivel's novel is more than a simple moral allegory. It grapples with the anxiety of a civilization watching modernity advance and wondering whether its soul can survive. Written at the threshold of a new century, it asks what happens to a nation when the forces of Materialism and secularism declare war on its deepest convictions. For readers interested in the origins of French-Canadian identity, the prophetic tradition of Catholic fiction, or the uneasy marriage of faith and nationalism, this strange and passionate novel remains a vital, unsettling artifact.
