Post-Impressions: An Irresponsible Chronicle

Simeon Strunsky's essays arrive like a well-dressed provocateur crashing a stuffed-shirt dinner party. Written in the early twentieth century when New York was becoming New York and modernity felt both exhilarating and deeply ridiculous, these pieces observe modern life with sharp, affectionate malice. Strunsky dissects the pretensions of contemporary drama (including a memorably absurd exchange about the dramatic properties of steam), ponders the theater, and unravels the small anxieties of everyday existence with a humor that functions as both weapon and gift. His wit cuts, but so does his genuine curiosity about how people navigate an increasingly complicated world. The title itself signals Strunsky's game: he's not delivering impressions but post-impressions, the residue after the initial encounter, filtered through an intelligence that refuses to take anything at face value. These essays capture a particular moment in American culture, that threshold between Victorian propriety and modern chaos, rendered by a writer whose voice remains startlingly immediate. For readers who appreciate sharp social observation wrapped in elegant prose, who enjoy being quietly infuriated by truths they immediately recognize, this chronicle proves irresistible.
