Pollyanna Grows Up

Eleanor H. Porter's sequel picks up with a thirteen-year-old Pollyanna, fresh from recovering from a debilitating accident, as she's dispatched to Boston. There, she's tasked with 'curing' a reclusive, grief-stricken dowager, whose opulent world stands in stark contrast to the burgeoning urban poverty Pollyanna slowly begins to observe. Her naive optimism is tested as she grapples with the isolation and alienation simmering beneath the city's surface, forcing her to confront broader societal questions about human connection and material wealth before she departs overseas with her Aunt Polly. Seven years later, a twenty-year-old Pollyanna returns to Vermont, now playing host to her Boston acquaintances. The narrative deftly explores the complexities of evolving relationships as age and social status shift, and Pollyanna navigates the delicate balance between personal desires and obligations to those she loves. This coming-of-age journey delves deeper into the enduring power of her 'glad game,' revealing how genuine connection, even in the face of life's inevitable changes, ultimately weaves a richer, more interconnected tapestry of lives.
