Polite Satires: Containing the Unknown Hand, the Volcanic Island, Square Pegs

Clifford Bax's 1922 collection proves that satirical comedy need not be savage to sting. These three one-act plays deploy wit like a rapier, examining the absurdities of love, identity, and social convention through elegantly constructed dialogue. In "The Unknown Hand," two friends discover a controversial book has fictionalized their lives, forcing them to confront who they really are versus who they appear to be. "The Volcanic Island" offers the collection's most theatrical gambit: Dorothea Wylde debates an unexpected marriage proposal not with her suitor, but with Dorothy Wild, her own subconscious manifest as a sharp-tongued alter ego. "Square Pegs" spans centuries as characters whisk between modern dating and Renaissance romance, revealing that romantic expectations have changed less than we'd like to believe. Bax writes with the sophisticated轻巧 that defined British comedy between the wars, where the joke is always in the subtext and the satire never descends into cruelty. These are polite satires in the truest sense: they amuse, they provoke, and they leave you wondering which portrait is the real one.
