Poetical Ingenuities and Eccentricities

Victorian wit at its most delightful. This collection gathers the lighter verse from fin-de-siècle Britain, where poets stretched language into unexpected shapes for sheer amusement. Here you'll find parodies that poke gentle fun at the great poets, experimental verses that twist syntax into knots, and playful adaptations that borrow from literary giants only to send them up. The contributors range from established literary figures to anonymous versifiers, all united in their refusal to take poetry entirely seriously. The preface sets the tone perfectly: here is verse meant to amuse, to surprise, to reward the reader willing to look beyond the solemn face literature often wears. These are poems written for the joy of invention, for the pleasure of a well-turned nonsense line. For readers who cherish the sly humor of Edward Lear, the wordplay of Lewis Carroll, or the social comedies of W.S. Gilbert, this collection offers a window onto a particular kind of Victorian entertainment: clever, occasionally absurd, and always good-humored.
