Physico-Theology: Or, a Demonstration of the Being and Attributes of God, from His Works of Creation

One of the foundational texts of natural theology, written in an age when the boundaries between natural philosophy and divine revelation had not yet hardened into their modern oppositions. William Derham, an English clergyman and naturalist, assembled these sermons in 1713 to demonstrate that the careful observation of God's creation - the mechanics of the atmosphere, the balance of elements, the astonishing adaptations of living things - constitutes irrefutable evidence of intelligent design. He surveys the natural world with the empirical eagerness of the new science, yet interprets every phenomenon as testimony to a divine artificer. The arguments here would later be famously refined by William Paley in his watchdog analogy, but Derham's version carries the freshness of a thinker working closer to the founding moment of modern science. For readers curious about how Enlightenment minds reconciled telescope and altar, or for scholars tracing the genealogy of the design argument, this 1713 text remains essential historical ground.
