
Philoctetes (Campbell Translation)
Philoctetes is a tragedy by Sophocles, first performed in 409 BC during the Festival of Dionysus. Set during the Trojan War, it follows Neoptolemus and Odysseus as they attempt to persuade the wounded archer Philoctetes to join them in battle. This play is notable for its exploration of themes such as suffering, betrayal, and the moral dilemmas of war. It is one of the seven complete tragedies by Sophocles that have survived from antiquity.
