Philip Dru: Administrator; a Story of Tomorrow, 1920-1935

This is the most dangerous book a president ever wrote before becoming president. Edward Mandell House, the shadowy advisor who helped create the Federal Reserve and draft the League of Nations, published this political novel in 1912, setting its action in a fictional 1920-1935. The story imagines America shattered by economic collapse and class warfare, where a military leader named Philip Dru rises from the chaos to impose radical reform. House wrote it as a blueprint for how a visionary administrator might transform America in a time of crisis, and the parallels to actual 20th-century history are uncanny. The novel reads like a fever dream of the Great Depression, fascist authoritarianism, and centralized economic control, all written before any of it happened. House gave copies to Wilson and other elites. Whether it was prediction, prescription, or warning remains debated over a century later. What matters now: it is a disturbing, gripping artifact from the architect of American empire, revealing the roots of modern political mythology in the mind of power itself.
