An unfinished epic of extraordinary darkness, Lucan's Pharsalia charts the Roman civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey Magnus with a poet's fury and a republican's despair. Beginning at the Rubicon, where Caesar's crossing shatters the Republic's peace, Lucan renders war not as glory but as wound upon the land, upon罗马, upon the soul. The poem refuses the comfort of divine intervention: here the gods are silent, fate unyielding, and men driven by ambition to tear their nation apart. Lucan's verse crackles with philosophical rage against tyranny, with laments for fallen liberty, with scenes of such visceral horror that later poets from Dante to Shelley trembled before them. The necromancer Erictho summons the dead to prophesy doom; soldiers stare at their own battleground and weep. This is epic poetry as autopsy: the Republic on the table, its vital organs exposed. Why it endures: because Lucan wrote with his death already in his eyes, and every line carries the weight of a man who knew Rome's freedom was already a ghost.
