War ends. Peace begins. The catch? Earth is now a colony of Venus. In this sharp 1954 parable, Norman Arkawy imagines an interplanetary future where humanity loses a war it barely understood and must accept "peace" under authoritarian occupation. The Venusians aren't cruel, they've simply concluded that Earthlings are too violent, too reckless, too human to be trusted with autonomy. So they impose order: population controls, mandatory duties, a regime of surveillance and compliance dressed in the language of harmony. The irony's in the title: this peace looks remarkably like conquest. Arkawy writes with Cold War precision, asking questions that still sting. What is peace worth if it arrives as occupation?
