Patrol

The patrol station on an alien world is a place where silence is the only constant. MacMartree and his fellow space patrolmen monitor an empty planet, their days swallowed by isolation and their nights haunted by something they cannot see but know is there. As the invisible enemy tightens its grip on their sanity, the men begin to fracture under the weight of questions that have no answers: what is the nature of this presence that watches them? What does it want? And can anything human survive contact with the truly unknown? Hamling builds dread with the slow, claustrophobic patience of a man who understands that the most terrifying monsters are the ones we cannot name. This is science fiction as existential horror, a story where the enemy is less a threat to life than to the very concept of meaning.
