Parables from Flowers

These are not the gentle nature tales you might expect. Published in 1890, Gertrude P. Dyer's Parables from Flowers offers something stranger and darker: a collection of moral fables where flowers, birds, and nature itself become mirrors for human virtues and follies, often with surprisingly tragic consequences. The opening parable about the faithful wren couple sets the tone perfectly, a love story that ends not in reunion but in mutual despair, the weight of loyalty becoming a kind of drowning. This is Victorian moral literature unsoftened, where lessons about fidelity, gratitude, and kindness are earned through genuine sorrow rather than tidy redemption. Dyer writes with earnest conviction, her language thick with the sentimental conventions of her era, yet there's something hypnotic about watching virtue and vice play out in petals and wings. For readers curious about the moral imagination of the late 19th century, or anyone who finds darker currents beneath pretty surfaces, this collection offers an odd, affecting glimpse into what Victorians wanted their children to feel about being good.
