Over the Wire

Over the Wire is a short story by Eugene Jones, published in the early 20th century. Set in a mountain telegraph tower during a severe blizzard, it follows two telegraph operators, Jim and Big Ben, as they strive to maintain communication and avert disaster on a vital railway line. The narrative explores themes of communication, danger, and human resilience, culminating in a suspenseful revelation about a planned train derailment and the fate of an anxious operator named Donaldson.
