''Orvon onni'' by Heikki Meriläinen is a novel written in the early 20th century. It portrays Finnish rural life through the trials of an orphaned girl, Mimmi (later Minna), after sudden family tragedy. As she passes from a humble homestead to a pastor’s household and then into service with a neighboring gentry family, the story centers on loss, charity, social rank, and a young woman’s resilience. The opening follows a hardworking couple, Pekka and Kerttu, who carve out a lakeside home where their small daughter Mimmi is the joy of the household. The child is then taken to the pastor Pilvensalo’s home, where the kindly couple accept her, cherishing even her tear-stained primer as a symbol of her ordeal. As years pass, Minna proves gifted with animals and is sent to work for the Hövelin family, where a young master’s flirtation turns to teasing and the household boys mock her as “Minka.” The section closes with a cruel snowballing on Christmas Eve that injures her eye, underscoring her vulnerability amid classed households and hard fortunes.
