Oomphel in the Sky

A journalist arrives on the distant world of Kwannon to cover a routine assignment and finds himself at the edge of revolution. Miles Gilbert is an outsider by profession and temperament, but nothing in his experience has prepared him for the boiling resentment between the Terran colonists and the planet's native population, who whisper of an ancient prophecy: the Last Hot Time is coming, and when it arrives, oomphel will blaze across the sky. The colonists dismiss it as superstition. The natives know better. As Miles digs deeper into the mystery of oomphel and the growing unrest, he discovers that the greatest danger may not be from the natives who cherish their strange faith, but from the colonizers who refuse to understand it. Piper builds tension with the slow inevitability of an approaching storm, exploring what happens when technological certainty collides with ancient belief, and who gets hurt when two civilizations refuse to listen. This is classic sci-fi doing what it does best: using the alien to illuminate the disturbingly familiar.
