One Martian Afternoon

It's an afternoon on Mars, and ten-year-old Marilou is spending time with her Martian aunt Twylee while her father is away. The girl floats between childhood pleasures, a dislike of spinach, fascination with Martian insects, and the uncomfortable truths her father has planted about the Martian people. Twylee is patient, gentle, perhaps even fond of her niece. But the afternoon darkens. A storm approaches, and with it comes the weight of everything Marilou has absorbed: the fears, the prejudices, the stories of what the Martians once did and what the Earth colonizers have done in return. Tom Leahy writes with a restraint that makes the horror cut deeper. There's no melodrama, only the quiet dissolution of innocence as a child begins to understand that the adults around her are capable of something terrible. The ending doesn't punish, it simply reveals, leaving readers with the cold recognition that prejudice isn't just an idea. It's a seed that waits for the right conditions to bloom.
