Oliver Twist Band 1

Charles Dickens

Oliver Twist Band 1

Oliver Twist Band 1

Charles Dickens

In a Victorian England where poverty is criminalized and children are commodities, one small boy asks for more. That simple request , "please, sir, I want some more" , will shatter his life and launch him into a world of deprivation, exploitation, and unexpected grace. Born in a workhouse where orphans are fed gruel and beaten into submission, young Oliver Twist survives through a combination of luck and an unshakeable decency that seems almost impossible given what surrounds him. When he dares to protest his conditions, the authorities sell him to a series of brutal masters until, ultimately, he flees to the sprawling chaos of London. There, hungry and alone, Oliver stumbles into the clutches of Fagin, a sinister old man who trains homeless children to become pickpockets. Yet even in this den of thieves, something in Oliver refuses to rot. Dickens, writing in his early twenties with furious moral clarity, uses Oliver's story to tear open the hypocrisy of a society that punishes poverty as though it were a sin. Band One traces Oliver's descent into the criminal underworld and the desperate adults , some virtuous, some monstrous , who orbit his fate like planets drawn to a fragile sun. It is a story about whether goodness can survive when everything conspires against it.
