Old Groans and New Songs: Being Meditations on the Book of Ecclesiastes

The Book of Ecclesiastes is one of the Bible's most unsettling texts. "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity." The Preacher dismantles every human ambition, every pleasure, every earthly achievement with brutal honesty. For centuries, readers have wondered whether such bleakness belongs in Scripture. Frederick Charles Jennings enters this ancient tension with meditative precision and pastoral warmth. He refuses to let Ecclesiastes end in despair. Instead, he traces the Preacher's ruthless diagnosis of human futility not as the final word, but as the necessary clearing of ground before authentic wisdom can be planted. Jennings writes for readers who have genuinely grappled with life's apparent meaninglessness, who have felt the weight of "under the sun" and found it empty. These meditations offer a pathway through the Preacher's pessimism toward a hope that transcends earthly striving. Neither naive optimism nor nihilistic surrender, this is spiritual reading for anyone who has asked honestly: is anything worth pursuing?
