Now We Are Three

A former physicist abandons his career in nuclear research to raise his dying wife and their twins, children born blind, deaf, and mute into a world already scarred by the bombs he helped create. John Rush has retreated to rural Indiana, fleeing not just the radiation laboratory but the guilt of knowing his work contributed to suffering beyond his immediate family. Now his wife is failing, legal threats loom over his children's custody, and the twins possess a mysterious connection to their mother that defies his understanding. This is a story about the weight of knowledge and what we owe to those who suffer from its applications. Hensley writes with quiet desperation about a man who cannot outrun the consequences of his choices, whether personal or professional. The novella builds toward an impossible decision: remain in a world poisoned by regret, or follow his family into something unknowable. For readers who appreciate science fiction as moral philosophy, this is a meditation on accountability that predates similar themes in mainstream literature by decades.
