Natalie; Or, a Gem Among the Sea-Weeds

A baby washes ashore wrapped in sea-weed, discovered by a sea captain walking the beach at dawn. This is the improbable beginning of a life that will upend one Nantucket household and ask questions about what makes a family: blood, or love, or the mysterious hand of providence. Captain Grosvenor and his wife take the child in, naming her Sea-flower, and she grows into a creature of startling beauty and gentle spirit. But as she flourishes in her adoptive home, the question of her origins remains - a ghost at the edges of her happiness, a door that might open onto a past she cannot remember. The island itself becomes a character: its whaling heritage, its storm-battered shores, the tight-knit community that watches this foundling with fascination and suspicion. When danger gathers on the horizon - a storm that will test every bond in the novel - Sea-flower's place among them will be either confirmed or forever severed. Written with the sentimental earnestness of mid-19th century domestic fiction, this is a story about the fragility of belonging and the lengths a community will go to protect its own.
