My November Guest

Frost's quiet masterpiece about the strange beauty of sadness. In just a few spare lines, he personifies Sorrow as an unwanted guest who arrives each November, drawn not to sunshine but to bare orchards and stripped trees. What makes this poem extraordinary is its argument: Sorrow doesn't need cheering. It finds its own strange solace in desolation. The final plea - 'Don't be so sad, be sleet or snow!' - is both a comfort and a paradox, suggesting that melancholy, like winter, has its own dignity, its own harsh beauty. Frost wrote in rural New England but spoke to something universal: the way sadness can feel earned, even precious, when we stop fighting it. This is a poem for anyone who has ever found strange comfort in gray skies.
