Much Ado About Something

In the luminous realm of Fairyland, where magic breathes life into every blossom, June is crowned queen of the May. Yet her celebration is shadowed by an ominous glow on the horizon: London, a city of smoke and suffering, visible from the enchanted groves. When June witnesses the desperate poverty afflicting a child named Sally Wilkins in Paradise Court, she defies King Oberon's warnings and descends into the grim streets of Edwardian London to offer what aid a fairy can provide. Accompanying her is Bim, a gnome whose skepticism about human realms provides a grounded counterpoint to June's radiant idealism. Together they navigate the stark contrast between Fairyland's eternal spring and the industrial city's harsh realities, where magic seems to have vanished entirely. Written in 1909, this early 20th-century fantasy carries the torch of Victorian social consciousness into new imaginative territory, asking whether fairy-tale compassion can survive contact with genuine human suffering.
