Mrs. Vanderstein's Jewels

In a world of white roses and silken sofa's, Mrs. Vanderstein prepares for the opera, where the Queen herself will be in attendance. This is her moment. This is her stage. The wealthy matron lies draped in diaphanous white, attended by Madame Querterot, her hairdresser and beauty specialist, a woman of sharp tongue and cynical eye who enters each appointment like she's plunging into an icy bath. Meanwhile, Barbara, the younger companion, watches everything with quiet intensity, her own future tangled with Joe Sidney, a young man whose financial troubles threaten to complicate the polished surface of Mrs. Vanderstein's glittering world. Bryce's early 20th-century comedy of manners dissects vanity, social aspiration, and the brittle architecture of high society with wry precision. The prose fizzes with irony, each character a different angle on the same obsession: appearance, status, the eternal performance of wealth. For readers who savor the sharp comedies of Oscar Wilde or the social satires of Edith Wharton, this is a small, sharp gem about people who mistake luxury for meaning.
