Mr. Sweet Potatoes, and Other Stories

What if you built a business selling something nobody wants? Mr. Sweet Potatoes did exactly that. This collection of late 19th-century stories follows a dairy purveyor stubbornly pedaling milk to a Chinese community that has no taste for it. With his small herd of cows and his watchful daughter, he navigates the humiliations of his trade - a quiet study in perseverance rendered with wry affection. The other tales shift across Chinese community life, observed through the eyes of an outsider with an anthropologist's attention and a novelist's curiosity. These aren't stories that explain or judge; they simply notice - the customs, the small dramas, the daily rhythms of a world unfamiliar to Western readers. The result has a gentle humor and humanity that transcends its era. It captures that strange tenderness of watching someone try, and try again, in a place where their effort will never quite make sense.
