Novels

When their uncle Mr. Hogarth dies, Jane and Alice Melville expect to inherit. Instead, they find themselves disinherited, their inheritance handed to an illegitimate son they've never met. But the twist lies in their uncle's peculiar conviction: he believes poverty will forge them into independent women. The sisters received every advantage a Victorian education could offer - accountancy, mineralogy, agricultural chemistry - the same subjects taught to boys. Yet in the Scotland of the 1860s, these credentials dissolve the moment a potential employer sees a woman. Jane resolves to work. Alice retreats into literature. Both face a world that has systematically locked every door. As desperation mounts, Australia emerges as a distant hope - a new world supposedly offering fresh starts. Catherine Helen Spence, writing in 1864, transforms what could be a simple tale of injustice into something more complex: an examination of what independence actually costs, and whether liberation can be bequeathed like property. This is an early landmark of Australian literature, but its power lies in its universal question: can you force freedom upon someone?
