Mother America

What if America held a pageant to breed the perfect child? That's the audacious premise of this 1963 novel, which imagined reality television, influencer culture, and genetic engineering decades before they existed. George Turner, a geneticist, is tasked with managing 'Mother America' - a national competition to select the ideal mother whose genes will shape the next generation. Gloria Manson, a famous actress, emerges as the leading candidate, but as Turner navigates the absurdities of the contest, he finds himself questioning the science, the politics, the vanity, and the terrifying ease with which society might accept the commodification of human life. McClatchie writes with sharp wit and genuine moral complexity, refusing easy answers. The characters hover between genuine hope for scientific progress and creeping horror at what that progress might cost. A prescient warning about reproductive technology that feels more relevant with each passing year.
