Modern Magic

In an age when science claimed to explain everything, a Victorian professor dared to suggest it had barely begun. Schele de Vere's 1873 treatise takes magic seriously not as fairy tale but as a genuine category of human experience worth philosophical inquiry. He examines witchcraft, necromancy, and the metaphysical capacities attributed to certain individuals, arguing that what mainstream culture dismisses as superstition might instead represent dormant or misunderstood powers lying within us all. The book positioned itself at the intersection of emerging spiritualist movements and scientific materialism, challenging readers to distinguish actual phenomena from folkloric embellishment. Schele de Vere was no credulous enthusiast - he demands evidence while remaining open to what conventional thinking cannot yet explain. For readers fascinated by the intellectual history of the occult, this is a window into how educated Victorians negotiated between rationalism and the mysterious.
