Mind Worms

In the desperate years after atomic warfare has scarred Earth, humanity reaches across the void toward Venus, seeking alliance with a species rumored to possess minds far surpassing our own. But when contact is finally achieved, the transmission that arrives is not a greeting. It is something far more unsettling: an invitation to become... less. The Venusians offer knowledge, technology, eternal life, but the price is surrender of human consciousness itself, the dissolution of everything that makes us human into something greater, stranger, utterly alien. A young radio operator named David Raine becomes the sole human to fully comprehend the transmission, and he alone must decide whether to share it with a fractured, war-weary world that has spent decades envying and fearing what lies beyond the stars. Schere's 1947 novella crackles with the paranoid energy of its era, when the atomic bomb had shattered humanity's certainty and the Red Scare made paranoia into national religion. What elevates Mind Worms beyond typical first-contact fiction is its refusal to make the aliens monstrous or the choice simple. The Venusians are not evil. They are simply better, and that is precisely what makes them terrifying. The real horror lies in the question Schere poses to his readers: What if we are not the point of the universe?
