Mimsy's Joke

An archaeologist from Earth lands on Mars expecting to catalog ruins. Instead, he finds a civilization that has been waiting for humanity to arrive, and what they've been waiting to tell us is a joke. Oscar Nance is a man who measures history in stones and artifacts, not in human lives. When the stern military commander orders him to interpret the Martian message, Nance assumes it's a warning or a welcome. It's neither. The Martians have left behind a punchline that reframes everything humanity believes about its place in the cosmos. Grimes delivers his premise with the economy of a writer who understands that the biggest ideas fit in the smallest spaces. The irony at the heart of this story cuts both ways: we reach for the stars expecting to find something worthy of us, and instead find something that finds us worthy only of a punchline.
