Mildred's New Daughter

Four children face the cruel mathematics of loss. First their father succubs to a long illness. Then their mother, shattered by grief, follows him into the grave. So begins the journey of the Eldon children, Ethel, Blanche, Harry, and the toddler Nannette, orphans dispatched across the Atlantic from Britain to Philadelphia, to the uncertain mercy of relatives they barely know. Ethel, the eldest, refuses to let her siblings become burdens. She takes a position managing a shop, her earnings stitching together some dignity for the family. When cousins Stuart Ormsby and Percy Landreth enter the sisters' lives, something unexpected blooms amid the wreckage of their childhood: love, and with it, the promise of new homes. The boys bring their brides back to Pleasant Plains, and in that homecoming, the final piece clicks into place. Mildred gains a daughter, and four orphans discover that family can be rebuilt from the materials of hope. Finley writes with the sentimental clarity of Victorian domestic fiction at its most affecting, a story about how loss does not have to be the end of belonging. For readers who crave quiet resilience, first love, and the satisfaction of scattered siblings finding their way back to warmth.
