Martyr's Flight

Space Station One hangs in the void, a military outpost millions of miles from Earth, yet impossibly close to the flash point of nuclear annihilation. When international tensions escalate toward war, the men and women aboard the station find themselves trapped between their orders and the unthinkable: watch as humanity erases itself from below, or become the last witnesses to civilization's final act. Hank Searls, writing in the shadow of the Cuban Missile Crisis, crafts a harrowing portrait of isolation, duty, and the peculiar horror of watching death approach from orbit while powerless to stop it. The station becomes both fortress and prison, its crew bound by chains of command that feel increasingly absurd as the world they swore to protect tears itself apart. This is Cold War science fiction at its most anxious and existentially precise: a reminder that sometimes the most terrifying place to be is exactly between two superpowers, floating in the dark.
