Mémoires De Mr. D'artagnan
1903
Long before Alexandre Dumas gave him immortal fame, there was the real d'Artagnan: a Gascon gentleman with noble blood but empty pockets, riding into Paris to remake himself in the glitter of the King's court. These memoirs, discovered and published centuries after they were written, purport to be his own account of that wild journey: the humiliating first defeats, the dangerous duels fought over nothing but honor, the clever navigations through a world where a poor nobleman must fight twice as hard for twice the respect. The prose crackles with 17th-century energy, full of bravado and beneath-it-all vulnerability, as our hero struggles from obscurity toward the legendary company of the King's Musketeers. This is d'Artagnan before he became myth: hungry, flawed, and endlessly fascinating. For readers who loved The Three Musketeers, here is the source itself, rawer and stranger than anything Dumas imagined.
