Novels

In a small Danish town, the formidable Pastor Johannes Sidenius rules his household with iron conviction and strict piety, alienating both his congregation and his own family. His son Peter Andreas, called Per, grows up in his father's suffocating shadow, burdened by the older man's rigid values and the oppressive atmosphere of their home. When Per finally breaks free, he embarks on a journey that will take him far from Denmark, but the wound of his childhood never quite heals. Pontoppidan crafts a psychologically rich portrait of a man perpetually caught between duty and desire, between the past he's escaping and the future he's chasing. This first volume traces the origins of that internal conflict, the moment a sensitive boy becomes a rebellious young man determined to carve his own path, whatever the cost. The novel explores generational friction, the loneliness that follows absolute conviction, and whether any of us can truly escape where we came from. One of the great Scandinavian novels, it won Pontoppidan the Nobel Prize in Literature.

“One entry was entitled: "About God":"This thought has been ascribed to Voltaire: If God did not exist, mankind would have invented Him. I find more truth in the reverse: If there really is a God, then we should seek to forget Him, to raise up men who will to do good for goodness' sake, not out of fear of punishment for their bad deeds. How can someone give alms to a poor man with a clean heart when he believes, and has an interest in believing, that there is a God who keeps score in heaven, who looks down and nods in approval?””
