Love Among the Ruins

1945. The war is over for the Allies, but for Harry Leslie Smith, stationed in the ruins of Hamburg, a different battle is just beginning. A Yorkshire man who grew up in grinding poverty, he had nothing to look forward to but discharge and a return to struggle. Then he meets Friede, a young German woman whose family is starving in the rubble. Against all odds, against British disapproval and German suspicion, something fragile and improbable blossoms between them. Harry takes on the desperate work of finding food for people who are technically the enemy, while Friede slowly learns to trust the soldier whose country destroyed her city. This is not a war story with medals and victories. This is the intimate, ground-level portrait of a city reduced to ash, filled with refugees, black marketeers, and exhausted people trying to remember how to be human. It is a love letter to a woman, to a broken city, and to the stubborn persistence of hope when everything has been lost.
